Shiatsu Bodywork Syllabus: Stage 2
Completion of Stage 2 means the completion of one third of the Shiatsu Therapy Diploma course. It also constitutes virtual completion of the Shiatsu Bodywork Certificate course (with the exception of the 3 day Sotai course, Physiology homestudy and a practical exam).Stage 2 is mainly focused on learning the location and function of the 12 classical channels and their associated tsubos (points); the function of the organs associated with those channels; and completion of the anatomy curriculum.
PRACTICAL TECHNIQUE
Shiatsu technique applied in all positions to the twelve classical channels
The principles and techniques of Shiatsu taught in the Foundation Course (Stage 1) are expanded and applied to each of the 12 classical channels to build a systematic and fluent framework for Shiatsu application.
Ampuku technique
Special techniques applied to the abdomen.
Therapeutic stretching
Understanding the physiology of stretch reflexes and the 'Sotai' rebalancing exercise system, designed to increase flexibility and re-balance posture.
Cross Fibre muscle flushing technique
Technique to reduce muscular stiffness and pain.
Channel stretching and opening methods
Precise stretching of the limbs for gaining easier access to Ki within the classical channels.
Structure and location of tsubos (pressure points)
Practical experiential understanding of the nature and location of the major points in relation to surface anatomy.
Regular practical feedback and evaluation
One to one feedback on your technique.
THEORY
The Vital SubstancesThe role of Ki (Qi), Blood, Essence and Body Fluids in relation to health. Includes how Ki is acquired and transformed within the body.
Zangfu functions
The internal organs and related body/mind functions as interpreted through oriental medicine.
Action and indication of tsubos (pressure points)
How each pressure point effects the body/mind when activated.
Yu and bo points (shu and mu points)
Points which become tender when their corresponding organ is malfunctioning; and therefore how they can be used as an aid to diagnosis.
Anatomy
Muscle location and function, and body mechanics.
Basic visual and palpatory diagnosis
How to 'read' the body to determine imbalances of ki within the channels.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND KI ENHANCEMENT
QigongSpecific exercises to develop your internal vitality and enhance your sensitivity to Ki (given in greater depth and variety than in Stage 1).
Do-in
A system of self-applied Shiatsu and exercise for treating yourself and for recommendation to others (also known as Daoyinn).
THE SOTAI AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE MODULE
This module comprises material additional to Shiatsu- Stage 2. It is designed to equip you with the necessary skills to practice Japanese Bodywork as a profesional, for the relief of musculo-skeletal and postural imbalances.Sotai
A system of partner assisted exercises based on 'contract-relax' principles, designed to re-establish postural integrity and musculo-skeletal mobility. It also serves to rapidly correct ki imbalances within the channels.
Ethics and how to set up a successful practice
Professional ethics will be discussed, along with guidance about maximising your potential as a succesful practitioner.
EXAMINATIONS
Anatomy - final paperThe final anatomy is exam is scheduled at the end of Stage 2 on non-residential courses, and at the beginning of Stage 3 on residential courses.
Oriental medicine theory test
A multi-choice test in all aspects of oriental medicine theory covered in Stages 1 & 2 will be given towards the end of Stage 2.
Practical examinations
These take the form of continual assessment via practical feedback sessions scheduled throughout the course.
Sotai exam
At a specified period after completion of the Stage 2 curriculum, students will be required to demonstrate an understanding of the theory and practice of Sotai.
